Beacon of Hope - March 2026 Newsletter

Hope For Seniors Admin • March 16, 2026

Bula Vinaka!

Dear Friends and Families,

As we step into the freshness of March, I find myself reflecting on the word that sits at the very heart of what we do here at Hope for Seniors — Hope. It is not just our name. It is our promise. It is the reason Susan and I wake up every morning and pour ourselves into this work. Hope is the belief that no matter where a senior is in their journey, they deserve to feel seen, dignified, and cared for — in the comfort of their own home.

In Fiji, we have a saying that a home is not just a building — it is where your spirit rests. That belief drives every care plan we write, every caregiver we place, and every family we walk alongside. When we show up for your loved ones, we are not just completing tasks — we are carrying hope through the door with us.

This March, I want to encourage every family in our community: you are not alone. Whatever season of life your loved one is navigating, we are here — with grace, with compassion, and with hope.

Vinaka Vakalevu & God Bless You,

Anasa & Sue Koroitamana

Caregiver of the Month:

Akanesi Fa

We are so proud to shine the spotlight this month on one of our shining stars — Akanesi Fa, who has been a dedicated member of the Hope for Seniors family for the past 13 months.

From day one, Akanesi has exemplified what it truly means to be a Hope for Seniors caregiver.

She is reliable, communicative, deeply compassionate, and an incredible team player — embodying our core values in everything she does. Her clients feel her warmth and her commitment every single day.

Outside of work, Akanesi is an adventurer at heart. You'll often find her exploring the beautiful trails of the North Bay on her days off — a lover of the outdoors who brings that same energy and vitality into the homes she cares for. And if hiking isn't enough of a gift, she's also a talented cook — another skill her clients no doubt appreciate!

Akanesi, we are grateful for you. Thank you for showing up every day with your whole heart.

Caring for the Heart: What Seniors and Families Need to Know

Heart disease remains the leading cause of death among older adults in the United States, but the good news is that many of its risk factors are manageable with the right support and lifestyle habits. Here are four things families and caregivers can do right now:

  • Monitor Blood Pressure Regularly. High blood pressure often has no symptoms, yet it significantly increases the risk of stroke and heart failure. Encourage your loved one to check their blood pressure at home or during routine caregiver visits, and keep a simple log to share with their doctor.
  • Prioritize a Heart-Healthy Diet. Small changes make a big difference. Reducing sodium, increasing leafy greens, opting for whole grains, and limiting processed foods can measurably improve heart health over time. Our caregivers are trained to assist with nutritious meal preparation tailored to your loved one's dietary needs.
  • Stay Gently Active. Even light daily movement — a short walk, gentle stretching, or chair exercises — strengthens the cardiovascular system. Physical activity doesn't need to be intense to be beneficial, especially for seniors aging in place.
  • Watch for Warning Signs. Unusual fatigue, shortness of breath, swollen ankles, or chest discomfort should never be dismissed as "just getting older." Early reporting to a healthcare provider can be life-saving. Our caregivers are trained to observe and communicate these changes to your Care Manager promptly.

Brain & Body Boosters for March

Keeping both the mind and body active is one of the most powerful forms of self-care for seniors. Try these this month:

01

Heart-Healthy Recipe of the Month:

Warm lemon-herb salmon with steamed broccoli and brown rice — easy to prepare, rich in Omega-3s, and delicious.

02

Brain Game of the Week:

Daily crossword puzzles or word searches — great for cognitive engagement and can be done from the comfort of an armchair.

03

Movement Moment:

Try a 10-minute seated stretching routine each morning. YouTube has many free, senior-friendly options that caregivers can do alongside clients.

04

Hydration Reminder:

Seniors are more susceptible to dehydration, especially as weather warms. Aim for 6–8 glasses of water daily — herbal teas count too!
